Exciting news to share for 2018 – as we have a Sagamore Farm homebred competing in the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover! The Thoroughbred Makeover is a training competition featuring recently-retired racing Thoroughbreds competing in 10 different disciplines.
Our 6YO gelding Johnson City Kid (Lemon Drop Kid – Shadow of Mine) has entered the makeover under trainer Nuno Santos. Santos is retired from the Thoroughbred industry and specializes in training Thoroughbreds off the track for a second career. He has competed in the Thoroughbred Makeover for several years, always impressing the audiences with his dressage prospects. The Thoroughbred Makeover takes place in Lexington, Kentucky in October – we can’t wait to watch their progress throughout the year as they prepare!
Johnson City Kid trained with Graham Motion and broke his maiden at Pimlico. He ran six times before he suffered a bowed tendon in August of 2015. After “Johnny” was given lots of time off to recover and rehab, he was not very interested in returning to the track. We will be looking for a wonderful forever home for him after the makeover.
Both Johnson City Kid and R J Bentley are currently training in Aiken, South Carolina with Santos and are thriving in their new careers! WATCH Johnson City Kid in a training session this month!
