As 2016 comes to an end, we are highlighting some of our favorite moments and sharing memories from a great year. Last winter brought a lot snow and some beautiful foals. Relive the foaling season fun by watching this video.
For another great feature of Sagamore Farm, be sure to revisit “Maryland Renaissance” in the October Issue of the Thoroughbred Daily News Weekend Magazine. Read the full feature story here.
Below is part of the story and a photo featuring trainer Horacio De Paz and president Hunter Rankin. Earlier this year Sagamore Racing appointed Rankin as president, with overall responsibility for the professional horse racing team and its farm operations. Learn more about our team leader here.
This year, one of our favorite horses to watch was of course four-year-old filly Miss Temple City by Temple City out of Glittering Tax. She became the first filly to ever beat the boys in the G1 Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes at Keeneland and also won the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes and G1 Matriarch Stakes. Get to know Miss Temple City and watch our video about her here. View her race charts and exciting replays here.
Overall, our team had a great record this year. With 89 starts, we finished with nearly 50% of races resulting in a win, place, or show (89-21-15-7). Review our results, race charts, and replays here.
Preakness Weekend was an especially exciting time for Sagamore Racing. Two of the three Sagamore Racing horses entered on Preakness Saturday won their races. Chief Istan by Istan out of My Indian won the Old Bay Race (watch the replay), and Brute Force by Quiet American out of Hoka He broke his maiden during the final race of the day (watch the replay).
Last year many of our horses spent their winter training in Florida, and we’re thrilled to have our yearlings with Ocala Stud again this winter. Congrats again to the Ocala Stud team on celebrating their 60th anniversary this year!
We also made some great memories with our team during Fall Fest this year. It was great to see so families join us and enjoy music, crafts, hay rides, Sagamore Spirit, games, and fall fun activities. View more photos from the event here.
All of this was of course only possible because of our amazing team. Thanks to all who work hard to keep Sagamore Farm recruiting ready every day. Looking forward to seeing what 2017 brings!
